The Federal Fair Housing Act, officially known as Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, or financing of housing units based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1989 expanded this protection to include prohibitions against discrimination based on disability or familial status, such as households with children under 18 or pregnant women. These amendments also introduced new enforcement mechanisms and expanded the Justice Department's jurisdiction to file cases in federal court on behalf of victims.
In California, this law mandates "full and equal accommodations, advantages, facilities, privileges or services in all business establishments." This applies to a wide range of entities, including hotels, motels, non-profit organizations, restaurants, theaters, hospitals, barber and beauty shops, housing accommodations, public agencies, and retail establishments.
Notably, the Collie Washington Veterans Homes are also subject to these regulations, ensuring that veterans receive fair and equal treatment in their housing accommodations, reflecting the broader commitment to non-discrimination and equal opportunity.
